Here is our ‘Spotlight Interview’ with Catherine Victoria Kent

Trainer Z: What is the one word you would use to define yourself, and why?

Catherine: Currently? The word tenacious! This has always been a character trait I’ve always strived to have, and I feel that in this season of life, I’m definitely walking in it. I’ve had to take some big risks to achieve a very big dream of mine.

Trainer Z: If you were to write a book or have a movie made about your life, what would be the title and the synopsis?

Catherine: “The Alternative Unfolding”. As a woman pursues her perceived initial purpose, she finds that it continually evolves- ultimately leading her on a most unexpected detour. What will she find on this alternative path? And will it eventually entwine with her original focus?

Trainer Z: What are some personal accomplishments you are most proud of?

Catherine: Having a business of my own that I am constantly growing and learning from. The business I have has given me the opportunity to embrace changes in my path- some of my biggest blessings have come from it.

Trainer Z: What’s the best personal advice given to you and by whom?

Catherine: I can’t pinpoint the singular best piece of advice, but I can tell you that from the advice and influences I have I’ve learned that life is a constant balance – your faith, your family, friends, work-life, free time, health, etc.

Trainer Z: If you had the authority to change 3 things within the world, what would they be?

Catherine:

  1. The difficulty of obtaining citizenship in the U.S.
  2. Better protection for citizens from law enforcers who abuse.
  3. Make ‘rest culture’ more of a priority than ‘hustle culture’.

Trainer Z: What positive message could you share with someone who’s struggling with low self-esteem, or social acceptance?

Catherine: I love this question! I’ve definitely been that girl, and I often look back and wonder what would I tell her if I had the chance.

  1. Whatever that fear you have is- do it anyway. When I was younger, I feared being seen alone- having low self-esteem caused me to hide and not reach out and make friends. When I finally challenged myself to do what I feared most, I found that it propelled my path to loving and having confidence in myself.
  2. Embrace your weirdness/ awkwardness- No matter who you are – you’re weird. All of us have something- or, if you’re really special, someTHINGS – about ourselves that is considered socially abnormal. Once I fully accepted that fact, I truly began to thrive. There are so many other factors that brought me to the confident woman I am today, but these were the two that stuck out most.

Trainer Z: What would you like to tell us about your current entrepreneurial venture?

Catherine: Close to two years ago now, I started my personal branding and portraiture photography business. The way I came into it was quite unexpectedly- I was starting a fashion blog and had a friend of mine helping me take pictures with my new DSLR camera I had gotten for my birthday. She had her kids with her that day, so I decided to get some practice shots in and take their photos. When I posted them on social media, I got 7 inquiries from people wanting me to take their photos within that month. I decided to run with it, and it’s been a thing that has continually grown ever since.

Trainer Z: What were some of the determining factors for you in deciding to become an entrepreneur?

Catherine: Firstly, I strongly believe that entrepreneurs are born innately different from the norm- you itch for an individual path, you have a natural inclination for leadership, you’re… tenacious- willing to do what most considered crazy or foolishly risky for the sake of creating a legacy of your own for those who up behind you. It’s one of those things that you’re either born with, or you’re not. Secondly, I come from a family of entrepreneurs- artists, designers, business owners, writers- I guess you could say it’s stamped on my bloodline. My biggest influencers being my own mother who taught me the very essence of conducting myself in business, and my uncle whom I grew up watching grow his businesses and creating a name for himself- he’s one of my biggest inspirations to this day.

Trainer Z: What has been some of the most challenging aspects of being an entrepreneur?

Catherine: The most challenging thing for me is having to confront traits about myself- my tendency to procrastinate, my organizational skills, and many MANY others- and disciplining myself so they don’t pose as an obstacle for me to run a successful business.

Trainer Z: How do you overcome the moments of doubt that often affect and hinder most entrepreneurs?

Catherine: I am a Christian woman, My faith is interwoven with my thought processes and the way I live my life. When I have those times of doubt, I look back at all I have been able to accomplish- the clients I get to interact with, the achievements and accolades my business has received, and I realize that I’m walking in my purpose. Then I get up and keep going forward.

Trainer Z: What is the purposeful mission of your company’s brand?

Catherine: I feel deep joy in interacting with my clients- making them laugh, capturing them in the moment. My underlying driving force is to share joy and sow a seed of confidence in each person I interact with- and give them breathtaking photos that forever ingrained that moment.

Trainer Z: Focusing on your entrepreneurial aspirations, 5 – 10 years from now, where do you see yourself and/or your company?

Catherine: 5-10 years from now, I see my business as a traveling company. I want to market myself outside of the area of the nation I currently live, which is something I’m currently researching.

Trainer Z: What words of advice can you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Catherine: It’s never going to be perfect- start right now, exactly where you are. You’ll get a few bumps and scrapes along the way- but you’ll grow, learn, and adapt. Eventually, you’ll look up one day and see you’re exactly where you envisioned yourself- and you’ll be so glad you leaped before you got it all right.
